Jumes Restaurant, circa 1951

George Marvin Jumes arrived by ship at Ellis Island from Greece in 1908. He traveled to America by himself at the young age of fourteen. Arrangements had been made for him to stay with relatives in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The plan was for George to live with the Pappas family and work in their candy store, which is what he did. George worked six days a week for room and board plus a small salary. When he had saved enough money from his job, George paid to have his brother, Ted, come from Greece to America and join him in LaCrosse.

By 1929 George and Ted had put away enough money to venture out on their own. It was at this point that they purchased the Coney Island Restaurant from Alex Theodous. The original Coney Island Restaurant was located at 528 North 8th Street in Sheboygan. George and Ted continued to operate it at this location until 1951. It was in 1951 that the business was relocated to 504 North 8th Street which is where it is located today. With the move came a new name…Jumes Restaurant.

In 1961 George’s son, Louis, joined the family business. Prior to this time, Louis had attended culinary school in Madison, Wisconsin and also studied in Paris, France. His passion for the culinary arts led to the development of Jumes Catering which was started in December of 1961. The Jumes family continues to operate the restaurant and catering business to this day.
